GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are helping millions of people lose significant weight, often quickly. That is, for many, a genuine gift to their health, and I am happy for every one of them. But the face was not consulted. Facial fat is part of what keeps skin looking full and lifted, and when weight comes off rapidly, the face loses volume faster than the skin can gracefully adjust. Add the natural collagen decline that was already underway, and you get the look the tabloids gleefully named Ozempic face: hollowed cheeks, deflation, skin that seems suddenly loose, tired, a little older than its owner.
I want to say this clearly, because nobody else seems to: this is not damage. It is a transition. And transitions can be supported.
What your skin needs during rapid weight loss
Think of it as escorting your skin through a fast-moving chapter. First, collagen stimulation, early and consistently. Treatments like PRX, resurfacing peels, and LED therapy signal your fibroblasts to build while the volume beneath them shifts, so the skin retracts and firms rather than folds. Starting when you start the medication is ideal. Starting later still works. Skin is forgiving that way, rather like a good mother.
Second, serious hydration. GLP-1 medications suppress appetite, and thirst tends to get suppressed along with it, while protein intake often drops too. Skin is built from protein and water. Feed it both. On my table, HydraFacial and barrier-repair protocols keep the tissue quenched and resilient while your body does its work.
Third, facial massage and sculpting. Lymphatic drainage and contouring massage support circulation and tone in exactly the areas losing cushion. It is also, frankly, a lovely thing to do for yourself in the middle of a demanding health chapter.
A word about the panic
You do not need to choose between your health and your face. That is a false choice invented by headlines. Support the skin properly and most of my GLP-1 clients emerge on the other side looking like themselves, only healthier, which was rather the point.
If you have started a GLP-1 or are considering one, come see me early. We will build the plan alongside your doctor's, and your face will arrive at your goal weight right on time with the rest of you.
