Inflammaging: The Silent Driver of Skin Aging No Serum Alone Can Fix
5 min read · By Ula DiGiovanni

Dermatology researchers coined a word every one of my clients should know: inflammaging. It is exactly what it sounds like, and it is very likely happening to you right now, which is the polite version of how the research papers put it.
Let me distinguish, because inflammation has a good side. Acute inflammation is your friend. You get a cut, the site goes red and warm, your immune system repairs it, everyone goes home for dinner. Inflammaging is the other kind: chronic, low-grade inflammation that never fully switches off. It simmers beneath the surface for years, fed by UV, pollution, stress, sugar, poor sleep, and a compromised barrier. You will not feel it. Your collagen will.
What it does over time
That constant simmer activates enzymes called MMPs whose entire career is dismantling your collagen and elastin. Very industrious little things. It degrades your barrier, which lets in more irritants, which drives more inflammation, a feedback loop with terrible manners. It slows cell turnover and dims the glow. Adult breakouts, redness, reactivity, and premature sagging usually trace back to this single root, and it works invisibly until the damage is well established.
Why product-hopping makes it worse
A confession from the treatment room: the most inflamed skin I see does not belong to women who do nothing. It belongs to brilliant, devoted women running twelve-step routines. Every viral acid layered onto a stressed barrier is another log on the fire. When I trained in Paris, the philosophy was three excellent products, used forever. The French call it la mesure, the art of enough. In skincare, more is frequently just more inflammation with prettier packaging.
The longevity approach
Calming inflammaging takes a system, not a hero product. A simplified routine built around barrier repair. Professional treatments that strengthen rather than strip. The unglamorous fundamentals: daily SPF, real sleep, less sugar, an actual afternoon off now and then. And regular assessment, because redness and reactivity are your skin filing an early complaint, in writing. Smart clients read the memo. Everyone else waits for the wrinkle.
Your skin speaks long before it sags, kochanie. My job is to listen early. If yours has felt reactive, dull, or simply not itself, consider this your invitation.
